Arrived into Shantou, the city of Phoenix Mountain, one of my favorite, and oldest, tea cultures in the world. Inhabited by centuries old arbor type camellia sinensis trees, these are some formidable teas.

Pictured here: Mid mountain 700 meter Ya Sai, or Duck Poop Phoenix Oolong. Only the locals drink this tea and not everyone can afford the peak mountain old trees. But where there is demand, there is a way- the ducks didn’t migrate, the branches of the original trees did, midway down the mountain for faster growth and more yield. Last year, we got the Duck Poop Phoenix from the 1400 meter high, original trees of course. It’s not the same without the ducks!

Properly translated, the Silver Flower in Chinese is 金銀花, which is Honeysuckle. So our connoisseur collection of Phoenix teas this season will be:
Honeysuckle Phoenix(aka Duck Poop)
Song Zhong
Jasmine Fragrance

We will take a break from Almond, which had a funny finish this season, and not sure about the 8 Immortals yet. Yellow Branch was way too expensive this season so we will take a break as well. This is a rare new selection and no one should be disappointed at the change up…

This selection will be tasted at the Harvest Party May 2nd, so reserve your space early.

The lot I chose today was a Pre-Ming harvest of the Honey Fragrance. Friends, fans, and tea kindreds: this is by far the best lot of Phoenix Honey I have ever selected. Last winter was harsh and the spring before that was charred slightly. This time, to make it up to all you dedicated Phoenix tea fans, this will be a year to remember. I will have a small amount with me first for us to taste at the Harvest Party.
Well, Mr. Wei is the best. He’s far too young for praise, but at least we’ll have great Phoenix teas for many years to come.

Mr. Wei, one of the finest Phoenix oolong farmer/producers ever met, and certainly the youngest. His posse of guys in the ‘hood hang out all day and night…… making and drinking tea!
The large extended family all but takes over the whole of Wudong Peak, which is the highest point of Phoenix Mountain. Mr Wei is the enviable owner of that one and only old Jasmine Fragrance tree (15,000 RMB/Jin) and is not sold to any regular humans. He does however, have a few jins from the tree progenies, which I will have a bit for us to taste. His teas are almost surreal, and moves one to tears… Tea tears.
