Aside from money and passport, the most essential item is the Kleenex when traveling in China. You can not live without this. It is toilet paper, napkin, for clearing pollution and sweat off your face, covering your nose when you go into a bathroom, fanning off cigarette smoke; and if you are really into local customs, spitting into it is also appropriate.
